Het eerste nummer van de derde jaargang van Octane is een feit. Octane 013 is een extra dik winternummer geworden, met van mij een bijdrage die bij de winter past. Want sneeuw en koude zijn nog altijd synoniem met de Rally van Monte Carlo, ook al is dat een heel ander evenement dan vroeger.<\/p>\n

Om hernieuwd kennis te maken met de hero\u00efek van toen, ging ik met Perry Snijders<\/a> op zoek naar het verhaal van Gerard Bakker Schut, de Nederlandse winnaar van de editie van 1938. In tien pagina’s, rijkelijk verluchtigd met foto’s uit het familiearchief, brengen we ‘Budje’ weer tot leven. Zijn dochters en kleindochter vertellen over de kleine ‘Javaanse prins’, die eerst naam maakte op de motor en daarna een geducht rallyrijder werd, culminerend in een triomf met internationaal aanzien, maar die in Nederland allang is vergeten. Perry rijdt bovendien in een zelfde type Ford V8 – van Amsterdamse makelij! – als waarmee ‘Bud’ Bakker Schut de rally won.<\/p>\n
