Maar liefst vijf keer won hij de 24 Uur van Le Mans. Hij staat bekend als een van de beste endurance-coureurs die de autosport ooit heeft gekend. Toch blijven monoposto\u2019s zijn eerste en grootste liefde, zo vertrouwt Derek Bell ons toe tijdens een gesprek op een historische locatie: het fameuze Hotel de France in La Chartre-sur-le-Loir, een slaperig dorpje op zo\u2019n 40 kilometer van Le Mans, waar ooit Aston Martin DBR1\u2019s, Ford GT40\u2019s en Porsche 917\u2019s werden klaargestoomd voor de 24 Heures<\/i><\/em>. Het is een van Bells favoriete plekken op aarde, een goede reden om Octane langdurig te woord te staan.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We hebben met Bell afgesproken op de donderdag van het Le Mans-weekend. Vanavond vinden de twee laatste kwalificatiesessies van het weekend plaats, maar zover is het nog niet. Deze zonnige ochtend in La Chartre-sur-le-Loir staat voor ons in het teken van het verleden \u2013 hoewel Derek Bell ondanks zijn getaande gezicht nog lang niet overkomt als een oude man. Sterker nog, het vuur is geregeld in zijn ogen te zien als hij een van zijn stokpaardjes berijdt. De Brit die doorgaans zo flegmatiek overkomt, kijkt je dan strak aan, om zich ervan te verzekeren dat hij je volledige aandacht heeft.<\/p>\n

Aandacht heeft de Octane-columnist deze ochtend trouwens voor iedereen. De tien minuten die Eurosport heeft bedongen, worden er twintig. Zijn fans, die in groten getale naar het hotel zijn gekomen waar hij al jaren stamgast is, laat hij pas in de steek als de laatste handtekening is gezet. Ons was vooraf een kwartiertje beloofd \u2013 we krijgen er drie. Het gezelschap waarmee we straks aan de lunch zitten, moet erop wachten. Wat scheelt, is dat Bell van deze plek houdt, met al zijn Franse charme, al heeft het hotel inmiddels een nieuwe Britse eigenaar.<\/p>\n
